My work is done from direct observation, whether I am painting a studio set-up still life, a plein-air landscape or a mural. In all areas of painting my focus is on light, sharp contrasts and rich color.

In my still life’s I often use unusual perspective, high key color and objects chosen for the contrast and shadows they create in the composition. The result has an abstract feel, yet is based on real objects, since I paint what I see.

The same principles apply to my more recent plein-air landscape work. I seek out compositions where I see sharp contrasts, light and shadows on the ground and in the sky formations. Due to the rapidly changing conditions, these striking elements have to be painted immediately and boldly. I again, paint what I see, I just have to see quickly and record it with a sense of urgency particular to plein-air work. I am drawn to the long, wide-open views of Maryland and Virginia farmlands and coastal areas. The patterns provided by different colors of fields, marsh, water and sky are endlessly fascinating to me."
